Winter Concert: “Folk Music from Around the World”

Folk music from around the world takes center stage at Dexter Community Band’s free Winter concert on Sunday, March 3.

The 3 p.m. event will be held at the Center for Performing Arts in Dexter High School, 2200 North Parker Road, Dexter.

Directed by William Gourley, the program will include a special connection to the band’s history. James Hosay’s “Highlander Legacy: Variations on “Comin‘ Thro‘ the Rye”, was commissioned by the band in memory of its founding conductor, David Angus.

Other music includes:

  • Randol Bass‘s setting of “Shenandoah”

  • Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody”

  • “American Variations” from famed Michigan composer Jerry Bilik, which arranges the tune of “Barbara Allen” in several American idioms, from rock‘n‘roll to the blues

  • “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” from John Barnes Chance

  • Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry”

  • “First Suite in Eb for Military Band”, Gustav Holst’s breakthrough composition for wind ensembles also famous for its melody inversions.
